Some Key Dates for our Lions Calendar:
Our first February Lions meeting will be at noon Monday, February 8, at Ryan’s Steakhouse in Oak Ridge. Come enjoy the program and the special Lions fellowship at our meeting.
Program on February 8: Our program will be presented by Dr. Gene Caldwell and Ms. Dottie Thompson on the Emory Valley Center, which is celebrating its 55-year history in 2010. Dr. Caldwell and Ms. Thompson are co-chairing a public relations effort to remind long-term area residents how the Emory Center began and the important role it continues to play in the lives of 160 mentally and physically disabled adults.
Dr. Caldwell joined the Children’s Clinic in 1967 and practiced pediatrics for the next 27 years. In 1996 he became a State Legislator, representing the Oak Ridge and Clinton area in the Tennessee House of Representatives. He served until November 2002. While in the legislature, he was Chairman of the Joint House and Senate Tenncare Oversight Committee and traveled statewide trying to improve access to health care, especially for children. He is currently serving on the Oak Ridge Charter Commission.
Ms. Thompson is a retired teacher from the Oak Ridge Schools, having taught French, mathematics and special education at Robertsville Middle School before going to the School Administration Building as a special education coordinator in the Department of Pupil Services. She is also a co-founder of the Oak Ridge Children’s Showchoir, Showkids, and Showcamp, which she managed for 20 years.
Oak Ridge Lions to Contribute to Haiti Relief: Anyone who would like to contribute to the Haiti relief effort should bring a check (or cash) made out to Oak Ridge Lions designated for the Haiti relief effort. We will combine the contributions and send in a single check from the club.
