ValentineFebruary Meetings: On February 11,

the Club will have its annual Valentine’s Day Dinner; remember to bring your sweetheart for the evening. A special dinner at $8.00 per person will be served.

Our speaker will be Rev. Amy Cook, who is the Pastor of the Trinity United Methodist Church. She has visited with our Club in the past, and we are happy to have her return at this time.

And then - - - - - - - On February 25,

Zane Hagy will bring us information about Saving Little Hearts, which is a non-profit group that helps children with congenital heart defects (CHDs). Since CHDs are the most common birth defect, most people know someone that was born with a heart problem. Zane has joined the Board of this organization and will share information about what they do.

Calendars for the Year 2008 are available from Lion Jerry Young. The normal meeting dates of the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month are circled in RED. This will help you keep up with meetings and other activities of the Club.

A Continual Reminder: See Lion Bob Reynolds to secure and use Kroger Care Certificates for your Holiday Shopping; the money goes to our Contribution for Operation KidSight Outreach to help with Vision Screening. You can also buy certificates at the SunTrust Bank Counter inside Kroger’s.

Note: A contribution of $100 made to the Club in honor of Lion Wayne Henderson was sent to the Tennessee Lions Charities to support the KidSight Outreach Program.

$ $ $ DUES ARE NOW DUE $ $ $ Semi-annual dues should now be paid to Secretary Jerry Young or Treasurer Roger Land. For the first half of 2008, The dues are as follows: Active Members.............$45.00, Life Members.........$20.00, and Members-at-Large ....... $40.00.

The District 12-N Convention and Cabinet Meeting will be held on February 29 and March 1. DG Dean Harshbarger noted in the recent issue of the News & Views that the MainStay Suites in Pigeon Forge, TN, have extended the low Lions rate for rooms until February 13. It’s a new facility with suites rather than rooms. Registration forms are in the recent News & Views or can be found on the District web site at http://www.etnlions.org/ on the web page giving scheduled events. Plan to go.

In case you missed the presentation, our Club increased its contribution to LCI Campaign SightFirst II to $1,000, and on the basis of that contribution presented Lion Jerry Young with his second Melvin Jones Fellow Award.

King Leo Roger Land

From King Leo Roger: I routinely receive email from various Lions sources; sometimes I even read them. A case in point is one I received about member benefits. I didn’t know there were benefits other than the warmth and fellowship between members, the good feeling one receives from doing good works within out community, and the feeling of pride when strangers, finding that you’re a member, praise you for the Lions good works. That’s more than enough for me. The rest is icing on the cake.

Club Reports

Lion Jerry Young has been acting as Secretary. He reported our membership at 23 members. There are still four Life Members and two Member-at-Large (MAL); this gives us 17 members on Active Status.

Splinters from the Board . . . . . on February 4:

The meeting was called to order by King Leo Roger Land at 6:00 p.m. The reports of the Secretary was presented and approved. The Treasurer’s report for December 2007 was printed by mistake; a revised report will be submitted for approval.

The Treasurer provided a favorable report for the invested funds of the Club that include the money for both the Howell and the Kernohan Scholarships was presented. Good rates of interest were shown, particularly in view of currently offered rates.

The bills for payment included one from LCI for the member dues for $351.00, and a bill from Handley Optical of $75.00 for glasses for a needy person. Both bills were approved for payment.

Collections by the Tail Twister, Lion Larry Losh, for $14.75 were reported and submitted to the Treasurer.

Lion George Smith reported that the application had been submitted for our participation in the 6th Annual Secret City Festival on June 20 and 21 of 2008.

Lion Jerry Young reported that $1,600 had been paid for 32 pairs of glasses, and $460 had been paid for eye examinations for 23 persons during 2007. [NOTE: Eye examinations and eye glasses are provided for needy persons by most Lions Clubs. Since there are two Lions Clubs in Oak Ridge, we use the ADFAC in Oak Ridge to qualify the need and to divide the requests between the two Clubs.]

It was noted that our Club must elect Officers for the year 2008-2009 so that the names of the President and Secretary can be reported to Lions International before the first of April. Therefore, a meeting of the Nominating Committee will be held on Tuesday, February 19, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room of RFB&D.

Also, in the near future, the Scholarship Committee will need to begin its annual review of information obtained from the Oak Ridge High School.

The Lions present at the Board Meeting were: Roger Land, George Smith, Jerry Young, John Sanders, Keith Lowery, Bill Luzader, Don Scott, Larry Losh, Bob Reynolds, and Ron Bugos. [Note: Lion Bugos was at the Board Meeting last month, but his name was inadvertently omitted form the listing in this Bulletin.]

The meeting was adjourned at 6:50 p.m. EST.

Our Members to keep in your thoughts:

Jo Henderson, the wife of Lion Wayne and the mother of Lion Joe, is in the hospital.

PDG Dick Lines, and his wife Dee, should be kept in your thoughts. Lion Dick is in the facility at Shannondale.

Lion Bruce Link is in assisted living facility in Lincoln, Nebraska. His new cell phone is 402-613-0702.

A recent visit to the Emergency Room resulted in the conclusion that Lion Bennie Sanders had a minor stroke (TIA) in recent months. She continues to recover at home.
