January Meetings: On January 14,

the Club will have its annual m id-year review meeting. This will give all members the opportunity to voice their concerns or questions about the current activities and direction taken by the Oak Ridge Lions Club.

The major point of concern should be the induction of new and younger members who will carry on the work of this Club in the future. Membership is a concern not only of our Club but of Lions Clubs in the U.S. and also worldwide. At one time, Lions Clubs International was the largest civic organization in the world; it had more members that the total of the next three largest charitable organizations including the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs. Now, there is a possibility that the Rotary Club will pass the Lions in total world wide membership.

There should be a reason for this relative decrease in membership. W e just need to figure out what that reason is. If times have changed, we need to change our Club to fit the times.

With more members, many of the other concerns of our Club, like getting enough people to work on projects, should take care of themselves. Put your Lions’ thinking cap on, and bring your ideas to our meeting.

- - - - - - - On January 28,

the program will be a surprise. Please come to the meeting to see what the program will be.

Calendars for the Year 2008 are available from Lion Jerry Young. The normal meeting dates of the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month are circled in RED. This will help you keep up with meetings and other activities of the Club.

Lion Bruce Link, who has been the Club’s Secretary for a number of years has moved back to Lincoln, NE, to been near his family. He is living in the Gateway Senior Manor in Apartment # 504. Its address is 225 N. 56th St., Lincoln, NE 68504. He still has his cell phone on a local number of (865)771-0942; his phone in Lincoln is (402) 467-0942. An updated Club Roster is included with those Bulletins that are distributed by U.S. Mail.

A Continual Reminder: See Lion Bob Reynolds to secure and use Kroger Care Certificates for your Holiday Shopping; the money goes to our Contribution for Operation KidSight Outreach to help with Vision Screening. You can also buy certificates at the SunTrust Bank Counter inside Kroger’s.

A District 12-N Cabinet Meeting will be held at the Lions Volunteer Blind Industries in Morristown, TN, on January 12. All Lions are invited to attend.

Lion Roger LandFrom King Leo Roger: The New Year has started with one of our members moving from Oak Ridge; Lion Bruce Link has returned to Lincoln, Nebraska. As you may know he and his late wife Donna are native Nebraskans with family in the area. Bruce has moved into an assisted-living apartment and has a married sister living a few blocks from his residence. Although the move was expected, it still came as a surprise to me. Lion Bruce was a valued member of our Club who provide many years of service to our club, not the least of which was his several years as the Club's secretary. Oak Ridge's loss is Lincoln's gain.

By now you have noticed that our club has significantly been diminished in numbers. I have no solution to the problem of numbers. I just know that our Club has and will continue to play an important roll in the well being of our community. It should not "go gently into that night."

All of us should invite visitors to our meetings with an eye to gaining new members. Invitations should coincide with speakers and topics of interest to those invited, perhaps even with speakers suggested by potential guest. Ask your friends and neighbors what subjects are of interest, and we'll attempt to get a speaker knowledgeable in the subject. You might ask a potential member to be a speaker.

Let the Lion Tamer know when a guest/potential member will join us so that he can round more attendance for the meeting. Lets make a coordinated effort to show our guests that we are an "active" club.

Perhaps this New Year will be a year of growth for the Oak Ridge Lions Club. Roger Land

THE LION Magazine is a continuing source of information that comes to each member 10 times a year. The December issue was particularly interesting as our 90th Anniversary Scrapbook. Yes, Lions Club International is 90 years old. If you ever wondered what Melvin Jones, who founded the organization, looked like, there are pictures of him in this issue. Pictures of International Conventions over the years are featured.

In most issues, you will find the reports of the current status of LCI in terms of total number of members, clubs, and districts. Also, listed are recent Key Awards for bringing in members and recent Club Anniversaries.

$ $ $ DUES ARE NOW DUE $ $ $

Semi-annual dues should now be paid to Secretary Jerry Young or Treasurer Roger Land. For the first half of 2008, The dues are as follows: Active Members.........$45.00, Life Members........$20.00, and Members-at-Large ....... $40.00.

Club Reports

Lion Jerry Young has been acting as Secretary for Lion Bruce Link. He reported our membership at 23 members. There are still four Life Members and two Member-at-Large (MAL); this gives us 17 members on Active Status.

Splinters from the Board . . . . . on January 7:

The meeting was called to order by King Leo Roger Land at 6:00 p.m. The reports of the Secretary and the Treasurer were presented and approved.

The bills for payment included one from LCI for the Lion statues that are presented to our speakers at$128.06. A bill from the U.S. Postmaster for $68.00 for the annual fee for our post office box rental was reported as paid. Both bills were approved for payment.

Communications included a letter from Lion Sandy Teffeteller paying her dues, a letter from PDG Bette Purvis about the District 12-N Convention, and newsletter with requests for contributions from: CASA, RFB&D, Appalachian Habitat for Humanity, and the Oak Ridge High School International Relations Club. None of these requests were honored by the Board. Our Club does make an annual contribution to RFB&D in appreciation of the use of their facilities for storing sale items and for Board Meetings.

A $100.00 Christmas donation was made to the Club in honor of Lion Wayne Henderson and his family by Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Goins. This amount was added to our donation to the Tennessee Lions Charities.

Under Committee Reports, Lion Don Scott reported that he has currently collected 296 pairs of glasses from the local collection boxes in Oak Ridge and 447 pairs from a collection drum at ORNL. He has sorted these and has them boxed to take to the recycle center.

The fact that we sometimes did not meet the minimum 15 meals that are guaranteed to the caterer at our meetings was discussed. Lion Larry Losh had talked with the caterer, and agreed that we would increase our payment for each meal to $7.00 and that no minimum would be required. However, we still need to have a reasonable number in attendance for this arrangement to continue.

Meals at Meetings are Now $7.00

It was noted from a sign at RFB&D that Lion Brian Jenkins had left his job as Director of RFB&D and has gone to the Cystic Fibrosis Fund Drive.

The Lions present at the Board Meeting were: Roger Land, George Smith, Jerry Young, John Sanders, Keith Lowery, Bill Luzader, Don Scott, Joe Henderson, Larry Losh, and Bob Reynolds. The meeting was adjourned at 6:40 p.m. EST.

Our Members to keep in your thoughts:

PDG Dick Lines, and his wife Dee, should be kept in your thoughts. Lion Dick is in the nursing facility at Shannondale.

Lion Bruce Link still has health problems, but he is now in an assisted living facility that is near his family members. Lion Bennie Sanders has had some fever and weakness and is under care at home.

Jo Henderson, wife of Lion Wayne and mother of Lion Joe, has health problems during the last months. We hope that all will see improved health during the New Year of 2008.
