we will have as our guests at the meeting those ORHS students who will receive our Club’s Scholarships for the coming year. These students will be accompanied by members of their immediate family, and the students will tell of their plans for future study. It is always a rewarding experience to have these students tell about their plans for the future. Please plan to be present for this program to provide further encouragement for these students in their chosen fields of study. The Scholarship Selection Committee under the guidance of Lion Larry Losh has made a significant effort in the process of reviewing and interviewing possible candidates for these scholarships. We appreciate their efforts.
the original plan was to have the formal installation of our Club officers for the coming year. However, as you will read in other parts of this bulletin, discussions are in progress for the merger of our Lions Club with the Oak Ridge Century Lions Club. If these plans are successful, a different set of officers must be elected for the combined Clubs.
will be held at the Fountain City Lions Club Park on North Broadway in Knoxville from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on June 21, and all District 12-N Lions are needed to participate. This event replaces the ‘Walk for the Blind’ and the funds collected add to the White Cane Day funds. The Walk For Sight is at 11:00 a.m. and other activities include a car show, Arts & Craft Show, Cake W alks plus entertainment and a Health Fair. Lions are needed to participate in this event and to bring contributions from their sponsors. Registration blanks will be available at our meeting on June 9. If you can participate, please sign up.
W e need members to participate in our Club’s booth at the Secret City Festival on June 20 and 21 at Bissell Park in Oak Ridge. We have brooms, mops, and light bulbs to sell plus some large Coloring Books. W e need to tell people what the Lions do and ask interested persons to join us.
Obviously, we have a conflict in dates between these two events. We ask that some of the Lions who participate in this event on June 20 plan to go to the “Walk” on the 21. Other members will be needed to participate on the 21st.
Remember: Secure and use Kroger Care Certificates from Lion Bob Reynolds; the money goes to our Contribution for Operation KidSight Outreach that supports Vision Screening. You can also buy certificates at the SunTrust Bank Counter inside Kroger’s.
From King Leo Roger: Members of
the Oak Ridge Century Lions Club met
with our Board on June 2. They
indicated an interest in a merger
between the two Lions Clubs in Oak
Ridge. A committee of four members
for each Club will review the changes
that will be necessary to join the
activities and projects of both Clubs and
report their conclusions before the end
of June.
We have now sold enough merchandise in the Spring Sale to pay for the additional inventory that has purchased. The remainder of the sales will add to go directly to our profits for the sale. We need the full cooperation of the members of the Club to complete the sale in 10 nights.
There are two activities that need our support during this month. One is “A Day with the Lions” on June 21 and the Secrete City Festival on June 20 and 21. Since these two events coincide on June 21, we will need all members to try to participate in one or both of these activities so that our Club will be well represented both in the District and our city.
Thank you for your cooperation in these projects.
King Leo Roger Land

I would like to update you on Lions Clubs International Foundation's and Lions' response to the massive earthquake in China on May 12.
LCIF and Lions around the world are mobilizing more than US$2 million in funding and relief supplies. Within 48 hours LCIF committed a major catastrophe grant of US$500,000. Lions in District 381 Guangdong in mainland China have raised more than US$450,000 and relief material including food and medicine, Lions in District 380 Shenzhen in mainland China have raised US$250,000 & relief material of US$200,000 and Lions in District 303 Hong Kong and Macau have raised US$160,000.
A team of 40 Lions from Districts 381 and 380 traveled to Sichuan province to assist with hands-on relief efforts and the immediate and emerging needs of victims. The Lions are still in the area, disbursing relief materials including tents, medicine and food. Working with the Chinese Red Cross, Lions purchased 10 relief vehicles and ambulances.
An organizing committee comprised of Lions from Districts 380, 381 and 303 and the China Council of Lions Clubs has been formed in order to plan and coordinate efficiently on the relief project. An immediate and long-term relief plan is being developed by local Lions to involve four stages: rescue, support, resettlement and reconstruction. Lions are planning to establish Lions 'tent' cities using 800 family size tents. Swedish Lions helped supply the tents and are also contributing 3,000 blankets.
To support immediate and long-term needs, Lions around the world are responding. A designated LCIF account has been established to help channel donations for this disaster. Donations can be made online at www.lcif.org/donate noting “Lions China Earthquake Disaster Relief Fund” in the comments section. Lions of Ethiopia have donated $10,000; Chinese clubs in Vancouver, Canada expect to collect $100,000; and Taiwan Lions have committed $50,000. Lions in Brazil have partnered with a local company to provide 7,000 blankets. Many Lions are also helping by sharing this news with fellow Lions and the media.
Frequent and massive aftershocks have caused further damages and casualties from the tremor. There remain significant and varying needs. As in past large-scale disasters, Lions are on the ground now and are also steadfastly committed to long-term relief and reconstruction. Days, week and months from now Lions will continue to provide aid. There is a great need for tents since many houses were toppled in the quake and the rainy season has begun. Generators and water purifying machines are also in urgent need and will be well-utilized. Lions are using immediate funds to purchase these items and are also requesting assistance to obtain these items. Chinese Lions and victims of the earthquake know they can count on Lions’ support to help as long as it takes to rebuild structures and rebuild lives.
Lions and LCIF's efforts have not gone unnoticed. News of the relief being provided has appeared on AOL, Forbes, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Daily Herald and several other national newspapers around the world, including seven major daily papers in China.
LCIF and Lions in China thank you for your continuous support for the victims in the affected areas. LCIF and Lions are proving the international humanitarian good we can accomplish together. ‘Together 'We Serve,'
PIP Jimmy Ross, LCIF Chairperson
This rapid response by LCIF is a very good illustration of the good that Lions can do, as an organization that is not affiliated with any governmental body and thus are free of any political or national restrictions. As Lions, you can accomplish more than most organizations. JPSanders.
Lion Jerry Young is acting as Secretary in the absence of Lion Bruce Link. He reported that there were no changes in membership during May. There are still three Life Members and two Member-at-Large (MAL); this gives us 17 members on Active Status.
The meeting was called to order by First VP George Smith at 6:07 p.m. King Leo Roger arrived shortly after that time and assumed the chair. The report of the Secretary was presented and approved. There was no change in the Treasurer’s report for the Administrative Fund during May, and all of the deposits for the Spring Sale had not been tabulated. So the Activities report will be reviewed at a later time.
For payment, bills were presented from the Eye Center of Oak Ridge for $170.00 for an eye examinations and glasses for some needy persons, and for $1,024.44 in payment for the brooms and mops for the Spring Sale. These bills were approved for payment.
The meeting was joined by Lions Wendy Cain, Scott Gillenwater, and Bob Smallridge from the Century Lions Club for the purpose of studying the possibility of merging the two Lions Clubs in Oak Ridge. PDG Wendy Cain presented a table comparing some of the features of each of the Clubs. A committee of Lions J. Henderson, Roger Land, and Jerry Young was appointed to meet with the committee from the Century Lions Club to further reconcile the procedures for the two Clubs. Lion Bill Mooney, the incoming President of the Century Club will be the fourth member of their committee.
Items to be considered for the merger are meeting dates and location, budgets, officers, committees, and traditional activities and projects. Under Committee reports, Lion Ken Preston reported that the income to date had exceeded the current cost of inventory, so we are now in the profit zone.
The Scholarship Committee reported on the selection of recipients for the scholarships and plans for the presentation at the next meeting.
The Tail Twister submitted a total of $4.15 for fines. The second program for the June meeting will depend upon the progress of the joint merger committee in reaching a single set of officers for the coming year. In discussions relative to the merger, it was noted that the Century Club meets on the first and third Tuesdays at noon at Ryan’s Steak House. Their dues are $50 per quarter for active members, and this payment includes the cost of their meals.
Note that due to the merger of Trinity and First United Methodist Church, our Club will lose our usual meeting place available after the end of June.
All members are invited to express their opinions and desires relative to the functioning of a combined Oak Ridge Lions Club following the merger. Please direct this input to King Leo Roger or to any other member of the Committee.
If you have any questions about times, dates, or weather conditions, please call Lion Ken Preston at 483- 8396. Please remember that the help of all members is needed. Thanks!
