He is a former middle school and high school teacher and is currently an As s o c i a t e P r o f e s s o r o f Mathematics Education in the Teacher Education Department at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Taylor will be leaving UT after this semester to lead the effort to create the Eagle's Nest Christian Academy, a children's home in Anderson County, He claims the title of "lead volunteer" for the Eagle's Nest, as he prefers to let the donations go to the children while he will be earning a living as an author an educational consultant. His nick name is "Baldy" which comes from the "Bald Eagle."

And then - - - - - - - - - On Tuesday, March 25,

we will have a meeting in combination with the Oak Ridge Century Lions Club to host the Zone Meeting for Region IV, Zone 1. Members from the other Clubs in the Zone will also be at the meeting. The other Clubs are Harriman, Kingston, Coalfield, and Morgan County Central. Lion Leroy Shipwash of the Harriman Lions Club is the Zone Chair, and he will conduct this Zone Meeting. Note that we have changed our regular meeting date by one day to avoid conflicts with the other Clubs in the Zone.

Semi-annual dues should now be paid to Secretary Jerry Young or Treasurer Roger Land. For the first half of 2008, The dues are as follows: Active Members $45.00, Life Members $20.00, and Members-at-Large $40.00. The District 12-N Convention and Cabinet Meeting was held on February 29 and March 1. Lion Jerry Young represented our Club at the meeting, and he brings the following notes: Information was provided about new digital "camera" to be used in Vision Screening.

Next workday at eyeglass recycling center in Roanoke will be April 12.

There 130 registered for 12-N Convention. Remote Area Medical health clinics will be held on March 29-30 in Oakdale and April 12-13 at Campbell County High School.

There are 1252 Lions in District 12-N. This is a net loss of 9 member for the year to date. If number drops below 1250, LCI can require changing district structure. A new club has been formed in Unicoi with 28 members.

A Day with the Lions will be June 21 in Fountain City Lions Park; this is a new date and location.

King Leo Roger Land

From King Leo Roger: This month you will each have the opportunity of attending a Zone Meeting. We are in Region IV, Zone 1 of District 12-N, and Lion Leroy Shipwash, who visited our last meeting is the Zone Chairman. The purpose of the Zone Meeting is to provide connect ion between neighboring Lions Clubs, and to provide a meeting at which "good ideas" for projects, activities, programs, and membership development can be exchanged among the Clubs. Each Club will report on their status and recent accomplishments and discuss any particular problems that they have encountered recently. This is a Time for Sharing. Please attend so that you can see this phase of Lionism in action and contribute any thoughts that will be helpful to those assembled.

A MAJOR LOSS

All Lions and our part of the world sustained a major loss with the death of Past District Governor Frank Faris of the Harriman Lions Club on February 18. Lion Frank initiated the District News & Views, and he was its Editor for many year. He was a friend and major contributor for most of his 96 years. His obituary is attached.

Club Reports

Lion Jerry Young has been acting as Secretary in the absence of Lion Bruce Link. He reported our membership remains at 23 members. There are still four Life Members and two Member-at-Large (MAL); this gives us 17 members on Active Status.

Splinters from the Board . . . . . on March 3:

The meeting was called to order by King Leo Roger Land at 6:00 p.m. The reports of the Secretary was presented and approved. The Treasurer’s computer had been on the "fritz" and he did not have financial report. ["fritz" is the technical term for the fact that his keyboard and mouse will not communicate with the computer.] The bills for payment included $24.76 from LCI for the calendars, and a bill from the Eye Center of Oak Ridge for $250.00 for eye examinations for two needy persons and glasses for four needy persons. Both bills were approved for payment.

Lion Don Scott reported that 643 pairs of glasses had been taken to the Roanoke Recycle Center by Lion Bill Mooney of the Century Lions Club. Lion Don still has more than 200 additional pair to go with the group for Recycle Day on April 12.

King Leo Roger reported on the results of the meeting of the nominating committee and presented the list of nominees show on the first page of this bulletin. Reminders were given that the Spring Sale will be held on yet-to-be-specified dates in April. Also, the Scholarship Selection Committee should initiate the review of student records in the near future.

The Lions present at the Board Meeting were: Roger Land, George Smith, Jerry Young, John Sanders, Keith Lowery, Bill Luzader, Don Scott, Bob Reynolds, and Ron Bugos.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:35 p.m. EST.

Our Members to keep in your thoughts:

Jo Henderson, the wife of Lion Wayne and the mother of Lion Joe, has been in both the hospital and the nursing center recently.

PDG Dick Lines, and his wife Dee, should be kept in your thoughts. Lion Dick is in the nursing facility at Shannondale.

Lion Bennie Sanders is recovering at home from a minor stroke.

Lion Bruce Link is in an assisted living facility in Lincoln, Nebraska.

So it will not come as a surprise, there have been recent meetings concerning the combination of the assets of the First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge with those of Trinity United Methodist Church.
